Extended Workshop 1: GIS in Arboriculture: From Inventory to Impact
Date: 24 Nov 2023 (Fri)
Time: 9:00-12:00
Venue: Room A, The LU+, 3/F, Lu Plaza, 2 Wing Yip Street, Kwun Tong
Speaker: Mr. Matt Vinet & Mr Leung Wing Keung Mike
*English supplemented with Cantonese
This workshop will elucidate how GIS has been leveraged for a diverse array of projects, most notably for maintaining tree inventories, and will demonstrate the seamless integration of GIS data with tools like Excel, facilitating the calculation of tree values. Each participant will have a chance to use a tablet to harness the power of the GIS programme, capturing data related to tree conditions. In addition to these practical applications, attendees will discover how GIS is being employed in the US, both for the generation of work orders and as a transparent tool for public engagement, and explore the potent capabilities of GIS in the context of Hong Kong's arboricultural landscape by understanding how GIS has been pivotal in generating work orders efficiently and how GIS aids in mapping and monitoring disease spread trends among trees - a crucial feature that can redefine tree health management in urban environments.

Extended Workshop 2: Professional Report Writing Date: 24 Nov 2023 (Fri) Time: 14:00-17:00 Venue: Room A, The LU+, 3/F, Lu Plaza, 2 Wing Yip Street, Kwun Tong
Speaker: Dr. Martin Dobson
*Conducted in English
Writing a professional report is an essential skill for arboriculturists who are tasked with conveying information to a client (or a committee or a manager) in a clear, succinct and technically competent way. Even well-written reports can be improved. This workshop will set out the principles of preparing a well-written professional report for a specific target audience, avoiding common mistakes. Guidance will be offered on how to structure a report, starting with clearly setting out the client’s instructions, detailing background information in an introduction, presenting factual observations, offering opinions, and culminating in unambiguous conclusions and recommendations. Reports should be long enough to cover all essential details, but short enough to avoid repetition and unnecessary padding. The workshop delegates will be invited to participate in short exercises, general discussion, and group discussion. Participants are suggested to bring their own report to learn for self-critique. *******************
Extended Workshop 3: Tree Appriasal Qualification Course Date: 24-26 Nov 2023 (Fri-Sun) Time: 9:00-18:00 Venue: Unit 1226A, 12/F, Star House, 3 Salisbury Road, TST, Kowloon
Speaker: Mr. Dwayne Roger Daniel Neustaeter *Conducted in English
Tree Appraisal is a new concept to most of the arborists in Hong Kong but it has already been adopted in Australia, Europe, North America and other foreign regions for decades, applying to unexpected losses, tort claims, insurance claims, real estate assessment and proactive planning. This course is one of the only two tree appraisal qualifications recognized in North America (United States and Canada).
